France is the country of beauty and romance from the
vineyard-covered hillsides of Burgundy, through the lavender scented fields
of Provence in southern France. Further north is Normandy's historic towns,
beaches, and pastoral landscapes on the countryside, awaiting visitors.
In between are the cosmopolitan sights of Paris, with its broad boulevards,
quaint caf' and spectacular museums. River cruising gives me a chance to
look forward to a cruise experience that is rich in legendary cuisine, steeped
in natural beauty, and culture. Journeys through France go past some of
the most beautiful vineyards and vistas in the French countryside. Traveling
along the Sa'e and Rh'e Rivers, gives a chance to explore the famed region
of Burgundy, the lavender scented hills of Provence, and the majestic scenery
of the Ard'he region. The beautiful city, Arles was one of the cities that
inspired Vincent van Gogh.
Centered in the heart of Burgundy, Chalon-sur-Sa'e is
an important center for France's wine trade. The city's quays border the
Sa'e River, and the two lofty steeples of the 17th century Church of St.
Pierre can be seen from anywhere in the city. Beaune is the wine capital
of Burgundy and should be worth a visit. Many of the vineyards are still
owned by the H'el Dieu, founded in1443. Its beautiful tile roof is a magnificent
example of Burgundian architecture.
In the heart of France's Provence region is Lyon, a beautiful
2,000 year old town that has cobbled streets and the St. Jean Cathedral.
The Textile Museum chronicles the city's past as a silk and fabric center.
The prosperity of the silk industry was well established by the fifteenth
century, but silk developed into a thriving economy during the Industrial
Revolution of the nineteenth century.
Surrounded by steep hills and filled with lush gardens,
Vienne is the gateway to the Lyon countryside and marketing center for the
Rh'e River valley's agricultural goods. Other landmarks include the Abbey
of Saint Pierre, the Church of Saint-Andr'Le-Bas; the town also has a lovely
cathedral, and the Cybele Garden.
France is the country that everyone thinks of as a place
of romance, but it is actually has so much more to offer.
