There are a number of things to consider while shopping for new luggage.
Pick luggage with retractable rollers. These won't be pulled off or damaged.
Shoulder straps make luggage easy to carry, but make sure they are removable
so they don't get caught and damaged during baggage handling.
Most importantly, review the new carry-on restrictions with the airlines. Make
sure that the bags you intend to carry-on meet the new standards.
